I am not a fan of durian.  I don’t mind the smell but I don’t care for the taste either.  Durians have been popping up all over the fresh markets and after looking up the health benefits, I decided to give it another try.  To be chinese you have to eat the nasty things.

It has a consistency of expensive ice cream.  Nature’s ice cream.  One thing I love about HK is its close proximity to everything.  Durian is usually frozen for the long transit to NA, in HK the durians are fresh so the smell and texture is real.

  • Durians have a higher fat content than avocados.
  • High in Vitamin C, vit B, Iron, fibre and Potassium
  • Promotes sleep as it contains tryptophan (found in turkey)

Go with the steel cut rolled oats variety rather than instant oats, the less processing the better as the oatmeal retains its slow digestion properties keeping blood sugar low.  It lowers cholesterol levels so a lot of older people eat it.  If older people eat it, you know its good for you so you better do it to yourself now rather than be forced to do it later on.  Cooking it makes the oatmeal easier to swallow and faster absorption but I will eat it raw like cereal.  I prepare it the night before leaving the oatmeal to soak in water in the refrigerator with cinnamon and honey.  Peanut butter, raw almonds and fresh fruits (bananas to pomegranates) go in to add texture and mouth feel keeping it healthy.

Giant box of Quaker Oats, 10 pounds for $84 @ Bestmart

Oatmeal is also great as a dessert if you make it sweet.  It’s sweet congee, red bean soup etc.  I have 10 pounds to work through so I will see how many different iterations of oatmeal I can make before I fall sick.  Oatmeal is a great per-workout meal as the complex carbohydrates slowly digest in your stomach giving you constant energy through the activity.  There’s no sugar in it so you won’t suffer the sugar crash during the workout allowing you to exercise at a constant rate – longer and faster.

Oatmeal is also great for dogs.  If your dog sees you eating it, they will want it too and I am happy to oblige.  I may have to try this trick for kibbles.  You should be able to feel the effects of the addition of oatmeal into your diet immediately, you will not be lethargic after eating.

oatmeal with honey, chia and raw almonds

Stay away from the instant variety of oatmeal as the manufacturers add flavouring and sugar to make it more palatable.   Read the label, if it does not have any additional additives, instant oats are solely cut to a smaller size making it quicker to cook.  It doesn’t taste like anything making it easy for everyone to eat.  Try adding it into your diet.  I found oats in my museli and thus my quest right off into the deep end of oatmeal with a 10 pound bag purchase.

oatmeal.

my next big oatmeal purchase. Bigger will always be better right?

I love pomegranates and they are still in season for the moment.  I never had the desire to sample the fruit as I figure it was not worth the hassle to separate the fruit from the seed.  I was introduced to the fruit last year and found videos on youtube documenting quick ways to peel the fruit.  The seed is edible and good for the digestive tract.  Now I can’t seem to get enough of it.  I usually get my pomegranates from the fruit vendors and they sell for $7-8 each, they are usually the size of a grapefruit.  I was in Sai Kung over the weekend and happen to see monsters, $50/each making it 6X the normal cost and the size of a small watermelon.  The giant pomegranates are from Israel.  It tastes different, more sour-sweet (high tannins) than normally just sweet-tart.  Not worth the premium but definitely fun to hold in hand.

Pomegranates are high in anti-oxidants, perfect to mix into salads and good for you: reduce inflammation, enhance appetite, increase libido, reduce high blood pressure and reduce cholesterol.  Pomegranates contain high amounts of iron and folic acid strengthening your immune system.  You are what you eat so it’s best to enjoy the exotic fruits that are available in HK.  My love of grapefruits have all but disappeared and in its place is papaya and pomegranates.

Papaya – superfruit. PDW approved.

Papaya is a bad tasting mango but packed full of nutrients and vitamins that make it better for you.  It will be breakfast food going forward.

Papaya, Hong Kong. $10 gets you 2.

Papaya, lime, fish sauce and a sprinkle of salt makes Papaya Salad found in most SE Asia countries – Tam Som.

Papaya and lime is the Mexican way of eating it.  It takes the ass taste out of Papaya.

Papaya with dried crushed plum powder is the Asian way to eat it.

I’m going to make a papaya salsa using papaya in place of mango.

I had my first Papaya two weeks ago after researching healthy eating recipes via raw vegetables and fruits.  Papaya tops the list of most super fruits.  I could never get over the ass smell when I was a kid but as with most things, if it tastes bad it is good for you.  Papaya fits this bill.  I had purchased a lemon to sprinkle over top but I got lazy and ate it on it’s own.  Delicious.  The taste grows on you when the more you consume.  I would imagine ginger and papaya go well together.

My previous super fruit of choice was grapefruits but eating it everyday for 2 years tires out your taste buds.  I have been binge eating mangoes for the past few weeks and only stopped once the mosquitoes made frequent visits during the night.  I was a big fan of eating a clove of raw garlic every night but I no longer want to test the patience of the GF; therefore, it will now be papaya until it gives me a coma.

Mooncakes are in season.  It’s a custom here to give mooncakes to friends and family.  Expensive mooncakes are purchased to give away.  Cheap mooncakes are purchased to eat within the confines of your own home.  If its anything like North America, mooncakes go on special at half price after the gift giving season (September 8).

This is a traditional mooncake.  The inside is filled with a lotus seed paste with a preserved egg yolk in the middle.  It goes well with very clean tasting drinks, tea.  They don’t taste good.  It’s an acquired taste with more to do with tradition than anything else.  Buy one to dip your toe into it.  Rich tasting, sweet with the salty egg that will shock you.  You’re expecting dessert but the middle is savory.

As mooncakes are given out as gifts to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, the packaging has become much more elaborate.  With China’s anti-corruption graft in full swing, the mooncakes packages are back to normal.  Prior to the graft, mooncakes would be packaged in solid gold containers.

These are the new mooncakes.  They are not baked and require refrigeration.  The inside will generally have a fruit custard filling.  It is similar to eating ice cream.

This one is laced with durian on the inside.

Lychees are in season

Lychees are now in season so it’s time to start devouring these juicy bits.  The canned variety is stored in syrup and terribly unhealthy.  Most bars retain the syrup to make cocktails.  There’s no need to do it as the sweetness will mask everything.

Lychees are high in oligonol which is suppose to improve bloodflow, reduce weight and protect skin from sun damage.  It’s a source of vitamin B and C with healthy amounts of potassium and copper.  They are also great for a post workout meal as it has the ability to relieve pain and shrink swollen glands.

I buy it at the local markets for $16 HKD/pound.

Cherries are also in season but they have yet to hit their peak so they are still expensive at $40 HKD/pound.
